Why I Stopped Using Airbnb

I will never use Airbnb again. I’ve had too many negative experiences, but last week’s experience in Gibraltar was a nightmare.

I have used Airbnb apartments over a dozen times in the past decade, usually staying several weeks at a time. Sometimes they’ve been fine. For example, I enjoyed my relatively inexpensive luxurious apartments in Palm Springs and a nice large cabin in Lake Arrowhead, California. However, more than half of my experiences have been negative.

The issues have ranged from uncomfortable beds, noisy neighbors, filth, and bug infestations. Once I rented an Airbnb where the host told me to call him “Uncle George” in public so that he wouldn’t be caught renting his apartment since it was against the apartment building’s policies.

Last week, I experienced the proverbial “straw that broke the camel’s back.” I had booked 2 and 1/2 weeks at an Airbnb apartment in Gibraltar. It was incredibly loud and dirty, and did not have a working air conditioner, despite a/c being listed as an amenity. Check out the video to see for yourself:

The host refuses to provide even a partial refund, and despite my best efforts to fully document the case and follow all of Airbnb’s procedures, Airbnb is being unresponsive. I left the Airbnb within 24 hours after arriving, and it’s now been a week. I haven’t heard back from Airbnb in the past 4 days, and I’m beginning to think I’m not going to. I’ll let you know!
