Eating Healthy in Hotels, Part 1

I have recently enjoyed having a kitchen, but I’m back on the road living in hotels again. It’s certainly more of a challenge to eat super healthy (maximum nutrition) while living in hotels.

Once again, I find this quote to be appropriate: “If something is important to you, you’ll find a way. If it isn’t, you’ll find an excuse.”

Following are healthy meals and snacks that I stock up on when I get to a new city. What I buy depends on whether I have a refrigerator, microwave, or just a hot water kettle in my hotel room.  These days, most hotels provide at least a refrigerator, and many times you can request a microwave and kettle to be sent to your room as well.

If I have a refrigerator:

  • Mixed greens and veggies for salads
  • Pre-made quinoa and bean salads (I often find these at local farmer’s markets)
  • Pickles and/or sauerkraut
  • Raw veggies
  • Hummus (to dip the veggies)
  • Edamame
  • Fresh fruit
  • Almond or soy milk and cereal (if the hotel breakfast isn’t included)

If I also have a microwave:

  • Baked sweet potato
  • Brown rice
  • Canned beans
  • Veggies for steaming
  • Reheated leftovers from restaurants
  • Pre-made oil-free food, my favorite: Engine 2 Firehouse Chili

If I only have a coffeemaker or kettle:

  • Oil-free crackers
  • Instant soup
  • Fresh fruit that doesn’t need refrigeration, e.g., bananas, pears
  • Tea!

Engine 2 Firehouse ChiliMy favorite way to pick up most of these items is a local farmer’s market. I also may visit my closest grocery store; my favorites are Whole Foods and Sprouts.

Breakfast is usually included in my hotel cost, so I will eat their oatmeal (preferably, steel cut) and fruit (preferably, berries).  I bring my own organic cinnamon to spice up my oatmeal.

So far I have been able to find decent options at all types of restaurants, but I generally stick to salads, soups, and vegetables. My favorite food is sushi, so I will always try to find a good Japanese restaurant that will make their rolls with brown rice.

I  only drink water and tea. My filtering water bottle helps ensure I always have plenty of clean water to drink. I also always have my favorite organic chai tea from Numi with me. If I make it to a local farmer’s market, I may buy fresh peppermint, lemons, and local raw honey for my water and tea.

I wake up everyday feeling healthy and looking forward to enjoying my favorite healthy foods.
